Description
The Vice President, Engineering for the Xperi Mobile Business Unit is a critical contributor to the accomplishment of company strategic goals. The VP, Engineering, oversees global engineering teams engaged in the R&D, commercialization, support, and customization of embedded audio and imaging software solutions for mobile devices (e.g. phone, tablet, watch), personal computers (e.g. laptop, notebook, desktop, all-in-one), and personal accessories (e.g. headphones, speakers, cameras, drones).
The VP, Engineering reports into the General Manager of the Mobile Business Unit and works closely with the Mobile Product Management and Mobile Sales Team and cross-functionally withthe CTO, regional sales, field engineering, legal, finance, etc.
Responsibilities
Customer focused approach to decision-making and engineering operations to ensure
products meet or exceed feature, quality, time, and budget expectations.
Establishes standards and objectives for the team and holds the team accountable. Is accountable for the performance of the imaging and audio engineering teams which have a direct impact on business outcomes (e.g. cost, revenue, new opportunities). Leads through others to achieve overall product/project targets within the Mobile Business Unit. Creates an environment that promotes effectiveness, efficiencies and high performance. Establishes key performance indicators (KPIs) and tracks metrics to drive continuous improvement and product quality. Demonstrates Change Readiness/ Resiliency behaviors. Emotional Intelligence, heightened sense of self awareness and ability to adapt. Strategic thinking and plan development with emphasis on innovation. Demonstrated leadership and management skills. Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of multiple functional areas. Ability to drive (independently) successful internal/external outcomes without higher level management involvement/intervention.
Decision Making Authority
Defines and executesstrategic and functional initiatives that accomplish corporate and department goals. Communicates vision, standards, and objectives to direct reports. Manages department budget. Lead the engineering team to achieve overall product/project targets within the Mobile Business Unit. Supervises a team of highly skill directors and managers including hiring/firing decisions, career mentoring and performance reviews, and assigns work. Ensures requirements, budget, and time constraints are considered in software design and implementation. Negotiates productive and collaborative cross-functional working relationships with employees, peers, and management. Ensures continuous integration, build management, and release management are automated following company practices. Enforce corporate engineering standards, open source policies, and security vulnerability practices. Ensures company Quality Assurance, Software Security, and Agile software processes are followed and monitored. Set the highest standards for productivity, initiative and teamwork, and works to improve the performance of the functional area as a whole. Reinforces, supports an environment that promotes effectiveness, efficiencies and high performance. Negotiates relationships with vendors and partners providing software and/or engineering consulting services and products.

Responsibilities
- Continuously improve the group work processes for responding to new product opportunities, time to market delivery, delivery leadership, product quality, and operational readiness to meet the company's business needs.
- Encourage a team culture that is focused on transparency, predictability, and sustainable product delivery tointernal customers.
- Communicate the teams capabilities, goals, and accomplishments throughout the company.
- Plans, monitors, and manages the team budget and actively participates in annual planning cycles.
- Tracks team progress through metrics that impact the business (e.g. ROI, escaped defect, SLA achievement).
- Assurethe team is working on the right products at the right time.
- Enable the team to accomplish its goals by ensuring we have the right people, tools, processes, safeguards, support, and commitments.
- Remove roadblocks to ensure the team can move forward on its commitments.
- Support team members in achieving their individual career and personal goals.
- Hands-on project/process management when necessary.
- Budget approval up to $50,000 for travel expenses, test equipment, software, conference, training, and professional services.
- Contractor / vendor agreements.
- Software license agreements.
- Product delivery schedule (balancing product development vs customer support).
- Hiring/termination of engineering staff.
- PHD or Master's Degree in computer science, electronic engineering, or mathematics or equivalent work experience with knowledge in digital signal processing (audio or imaging).
- Minimum of 15+ years of work experience in software engineering for consumer products with a successful track record in system design, development,testing, and integration.
- Experience collaborating within large cross-functional groups to reach common understanding and agreement in a matrix organization.
- 5+ years' experience managing teams following Agile practices (e.g. Scrum, Kanban).
- 10+ years' experience managing teams and contractors in a global work environment.
- Previous experience as a systems software engineer, embedded software engineering, computer engineer, or electronics engineering desired.
- Familiar with hardware systems design pertaining to video and/or audio signal processing.
- Machine learning experience desired.
- Broad understanding of industry trends and technology innovations in areas of audio and imaging technology. Continues to stay abreast of new trends, technology developments, and methodologies.
- Ability to motivate and collaborate across engineering and business disciplines to meet very aggressive cost and schedule goals.
- Excellent technical and analytical skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities. Multiple languages a plus.
