At the Amazon Development Center, Bucharest, part of Amazon Web Services (AWS), we work on global-scale compute platforms, with special focus on serverless & container virtualization technologies, trusted compute, and server fleet tooling for AWS EC2. As a part of the EC2 Kernel and Operating System organization, we invent, own, and drive the building blocks that are the foundation of the cloud.
We are looking for passionate, customer-focused, self-driven software development engineers to join the teams working on the high-performance virtual machine monitors, hypervisor security systems, and the system management software building blocks that power AWS. You will participate in the full development cycle from design and implementation to deployment and operations. In this role, you will be a part of the Compute Capsule team, which created Firecracker [1], an open source virtualization technology that is purpose-built for creating and managing secure, multi-tenant container and function-based services that provide serverless operational models. Firecracker is already the basis of AWS Lambda [2] and AWS Fargate [3], and we are working with the open source container community to allow Kubernetes pods to be isolated within Firecracker microVMs. The Compute Capsule team has an ambitious roadmap of continued innovation in the quickly expanding container and serverless function space, all of it built out of the Amazon Development Center, Bucharest - come help us make history!
Your main goal will be to create customer value. You will: work to understand our customers' needs and engineer new components to meet them; own and automate operations; contribute new ideas and methods to continuously improve quality and development efficiency; and innovate in the area of minimalistic virtualization. You will also be a maintainer of the Firecracker open source project.

Basic Qualifications
- BS/BA in computer science or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
- Interest, knowledge, or experience in the areas low-level software engineering and/or systems programming.
- Skilled in using the typical Linux toolbox of open source software development and administration tools.
- Comfortable in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment where engineers are owners.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience focused in the areas of low-level software engineering and/or systems programming, for example with Linux, C, C++, or Rust.
- Proficient in using the typical Linux toolbox of open source software development and administration tools.
- A solid understanding of Linux networking and OS internals.
- Experience with distributed systems architecture and related technologies.
- Passionate about working in the open source community.
